And then there was one
Sprague bounces West; South Salem only CVC unbeaten

Sprague 35, West Salem 14

The Olympians used dominating defense and sharp offense to pound the previously unbeaten Titans.

West got on the board first with a quick 4 play, 68 yard drive--highlighted by sophomore quarterback Brett Smith's 39 yard run just two minutes into the game. The missed extra point made it 6-0

Sprague used a big play to get its first score five minutes later. Quaterback Jeff Kidd found wingback Tyson Giza down the left sideline for a 57 yard touchdown, and the Olys led 7-6.

Kidd and Giza hooked up again to extend the lead to 14-6, this time a 46 yard pass play with 8:14 left in the second quarter.

The Olympians added one more score just before halftime. Linebacker Brad Helvig picked off a Smith pass near midfield and returned it to the West Salem 27 with just over 30 second left. Four plays later, Kidd hit Chad Coburn with a 15 yard TD strike to make it 21-6 at half.

The Olympian lead went to 28-6 in the third quarter as Sprague drove 73 yards on nine plays, capped off by yet another Kidd TD pass--this one to Jeff Weisenhaus from 23 yards away.

West made it interesting late in the third quarter, completing a 72 yard drive on a six yard Sal Hererra run. A successful two point conversion cut Sprague's lead to 28-14.

West was driving with eight minutes left in the game when Smith was picked off for the third time at the Sprague 16 yard line by Coburn. Coburn finished off the ensuing seven play drive with a 25 yard TD scamper to give the Olympians the victory.

Sprague (2-1, 2-5) will play at North Salem next week. West Salem (2-1, 3-3) hosts unbeaten South Salem. CVC teams will play on Thursday night due to Friday's statewide teacher inservice day.

South Salem 21, McNary 9

The Saxons remained perfect in CVC play with a hard fought win over McNary at South's Bennett Field.

McNary fullback Darian Kauffman managed 120 yards on 20 carries, but was limited to just one touchdown by the Saxon defense.

McNary scored the game's first points on a 25 yard field goal with just under seven minutes left in the opening period.

South got on the board midway through the second period as Joey Placek caught a short pass from quarterback Conor Lynch and weaved his way 58 yards for a touchdown and a 7-3 lead.

McNary responded with a drive of its own, covering 73 yards on six plays. Kauffman rumbled in from 28 yards out, but the extra point was blocked, making it 9-7 Celts.

That was all McNary would be able to manage offensively the rest of the night, but South was not through.

Taking advantage of a Dustin Boyd fumble two drives later, South took just three plays to cover 43 yards. Running back Corey Bickler capped the quick drive with an eight yard TD run to give the Saxons a 14-9 halftime advantage.

The only offense of the second half came early, as South drove 62 yards on four plays. Colby Wall had the big play, sprinting 47 yards for the touchdown and the 21-9 lead that was the final score.

South (3-0, 6-0) plays next week at West Salem. McNary travels to Lakeridge in a non-league affair.

Redmond 46, North Salem 15

The visting Vikings were competitive through two quarters, trailing Redmond 14-7 at halftime.

The Panthers erupted for 25 straight points to start the second half to put the game out of reach. Redmond running back Taylor Johnson had five touchdown runs, including an 80 yard scamper, to give his team the victory.

Casey Reyes led North offensively, with 47 yard TD run and a 57 yard TD pass from quarterback Cole Ferguson.

Redmond (1-1, 3-3) will entertain McKay next week. North Salem (0-2, 0-6) will be at home against Sprague.

McKay 33, Milwaukie 0

McKay cruised to an easy victory in non league play. Scots running back Tony Gonzales had 250 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries in beating the Mustangs out of the Three Rivers League. McKay led 21-0 at half.

The Royal Scots (2-4, 0-2 in the CVC) return to conference action next week at Redmond.
